Today, in some areas of consumption in China that were originally only for women, men's consumption has also begun to emerge.

According to the data of a white paper from So Young, the number of male medical cosmetology consumers in China has increased by 52.30% in 2019, which is lower than the 70% growth rate of female consumers, but it is still far higher than the counterparts in mature markets such as Japan and South Korea.

Now about 30% of medical cosmetology consumers in China are male.

According to the data jointly released by Tmall and Cainiao, the stock of imported cosmetics for men increased by more than 3000% for Double 11 over the same period last year.

Moreover, according to CCTV news, 31% of male users said that they would never use cosmetics in 2016. However, by 2019, this proportion has been reduced by two thirds. It is estimated that by 2023, the global market for men's cosmetics will reach 540 billion yuan.

The men’s beauty market in China looks to be more promising than in many other parts of the world, according to new research from Kantar Worldpanel.

The new study, analyzing the behavior and attitudes of 22,000 men across eight countries, finds that globally, 32% of men say that it’s important to keep up with the latest fashion. This rises to 45% among Chinese men, who are also more interested in trying to look and stay young than average.

They are less willing to spend time on themselves, with only 8% saying they do so, far behind the global average of 29%.

Ashley Kang, Beauty sector Head for Asia at Kantar, said: “Chinese men have the interest but haven’t yet developed the habit of pampering themselves nor the knowledge of how to.”

Kantar Worldpanel’s usage care panel data shows that the products used by the most consumers in China are hygiene products like shampoo (used by 99% of men), toothpaste (100%), shower gel (74%), and razors (both manual and electric) 88%.

Ashley continues: “For the average Chinese man, grooming is strongly linked to staying clean and looking at his best in his natural state. This indicates there is an opportunity for growth through education and endorsement of various products. For example, products like fragrances or pre-shave treatments which are used respectively by 26% and 38% of men globally, are all below 5% in usage in China, almost non-existent.”

However, there is a group of Chinese men who have adopted more sophisticated grooming habits. This is particularly evident in facial care, with more Chinese men using facial moisturizer than in any other country (64% compared with a 10% global average) and face wash (63% compared with 25% globally).

Chinese men are showing greater concern around uneven skin coloring and sagging skin than the global men on average,” Ashley continues. “Given this tendency, we expect to see new products coming to market which meets functional needs such as anti-aging or whitening.

Brands should start with hygienic products and focus more on facial care than hair or body to win Chinese men. Products which are more functional tend to be unisex than male-specific, indicating that there is a growing market for this more sophisticated group which has not been fully catered to”.

Promising global picture

The number of men who say they like to spend lots on beauty products has risen worldwide from 17% in 2015 to 21% today. In addition, heavily involved men – defined as the 20% most engaged users of personal care products – are 4 percentage points more likely to say that they do whatever they can to look young, 3 percentage points more likely to spend lots on beauty products and 3 percentage points more likely to buy the latest brands and products.

Ashley continues: “Globally, it’s a promising picture for beauty brands and manufacturers. Men are increasingly comfortable buying, using and enjoying grooming and care products and they’re developing a better knowledge of what’s on the shelves.

“In China, there are two distinct groups, those who are very involved and interested in pampering themselves and willing to invest their money and time and others who just are not convinced of the need for personal care products in their lives. Brands need to decide which target consumer to address. It’s not possible to meet everyone’s needs – the gap between the two is too great.”

“If you choose to go with the unconvinced group, ensure simplicity and convenience is there. Don’t make them think twice and try to build your brand into their daily habits. Should you choose to address the more sophisticated consumers, beware that the ‘macho’ aesthetic will not resonate in Asia. We’re seeing a more ‘genderless’ version of masculinity in the media and even in our everyday lives.”

Looking across the countries included in the study, the research shows Brazilian men leading the charge when it comes to grooming, being 87% more likely than the global average to experiment with facial hair, 61% more likely to buy the latest brands and products, and 36% more likely to say that their looks are important to them.

This correlates with a more self-critical approach to personal beauty, with Brazilian men reporting far higher levels of concern around conditions like acne and greasy skin than average.

The search for eternal youth

There’s a recognizable disparity in how much men around the world care about aging, with British men the least concerned. Less than a quarter (23%) say they are bothered about looking young, in comparison to 58% of Chinese men and half of the Italian men.

Ashley explains: “In China, looking young is an indicator of a balanced and healthy life. Chinese people firmly believe that beauty comes from within and that unless you have well-balanced health, it is difficult to achieve a good look on the surface.”

While German men rank among the bottom four when it comes to the importance of looks and having a youthful appearance, they are considerably more likely to be found splurging on their personal care routines – 68% say they like to spend lots on beauty products versus a global average of 21%.

And, despite being known for their cultures of personal care, American and French men are the least likely to want to splurge, with only 10% and 11% of men pointing to a high level of personal care spending – suggesting they view personal care, not as a necessary expenditure rather than a nice-to-have.

The population of bachelordom in China is about 200 million. The proportion of people who live alone has increased from 6% from ten years ago to 16%; the proportion of people who are more than 35 years old and still single reaches 21%, which is four times as much as it was ten years ago. 36% single women said that they are happy without getting married; as high as 80% expressed that they would rather remain single than rush to get married.

It is noteworthy that trend of bachelordom does not only refer to marital status but also indicates mental attitude change. Married couples also enjoy personal space and happiness belonging to the single when they are not accompanied by their spouse.

As the number of people who choose to become single on their own initiative increases, “the economy of bachelordom” becomes popular. “The economy of the single women” and “the economy of the single” have created a series of business opportunities.

The “healthy green advocates” and “environmental protection” segment

Food is the paramount necessity of the people, and safety is the top issue. In recent years, shocking security incidents of food, drug, haze, and water pollution were reported repeatedly. Food security and health have become a top concern in China.

People care for their own health, extending concerns to the environment and sustainable development. The proportion of consumers who are not satisfied with food security or medical treatment is among the highest which are 57% and 47% of respondents respectively according to BCG.

Report on Chinese Green consumers in 2016 issued by AliResearch indicated that Chinese consumers’ aspiration on green consumption and environmental protection upsurges unprecedentedly; their pursuit of healthy and green lifestyle is not only reflected on the preference on green products selections but also reflected on that they hope their consumption behaviors and patterns of consumption will meet health environmental protection standard.

According to a GFK survey, 73% interviewees expressed that they feel guilty if their lifestyle is harmful to the environment. The proportion ranks the 7th among the 23 countries participated in the survey. Furthermore, as high as 80% respondents think that brands and companies shall be responsible for the environment.

Advocating healthy life, laying emphasis on environmental protection, and the idea of sustainability make “environment-friendly consumers” become a new large Chinese consumer segment which develops rapidly. The AliResearch report also shows that the internet has become the main battlefield of green consumption. Chinese consumers are increasingly keen to spend longer time researching their own consumption need and acquire purchase information through digital platforms such as the “Little Red Book” to help with their purchase decisions.

Furthermore, experiential consumption has become a kind of trend in China. Consumers are no longer satisfied with visiting familiar cultural and geographical environment and traditional tourist spots; they take delight in tourism which is full of exotic charm and features unconventionality and extreme sports.

According to the report of “high-end tourism in China” issued by Hurun, the popularity to Japan and Korea has declined from 58% to 36% between 2015 and 2017. However, tourism in other foreign lands such as Africa, Antarctica, Arctic, and the Middle East has grown from less than 10% to around 20%. Between 2015 and 2018, the expected growth of participation in rock climbing, motorcycle race and surfing is 124%, 103% and 70% respectively.

Some traditional businesses affected by the internet have identified new opportunities for the “experience first” consumers by crafting the design and sales of customer experiences. A rising group of “experience first” consumers in China is willing to invest in their interests; and, some also expect to achieve a professional level of skills.

In recent years, professional cameras are popular among some photography enthusiasts; mobile applications for fitness and cooking have attracted as many as eight to nine million active users. All of these indicate that more and more Chinese consumers are willing to spend money and time to improve skill levels of their interests.

“Two-dimensional Space” and “virtual social” consumers

“二次元” (Er Ci Yuan) refers to the two-dimensional space, namely the flat space where the early animation and games were composed. And, consumers who are addicted to or fans of those characters in the animations of games are called Er Ci Yuan or “two-dimensional space”.

This consumer segment has an everlasting expectation for skills and experience; they will complete purchase and consumption while studying and creating. Digital times have created “two-dimensional” and “virtual social networking” consumers segments.

Parents who once deemed internet as savage beasts for their children are constantly interacting on WeChat now. Students, white-collar workers, and the elderly all have a smartphone enabling them to 24/7 access to the internet.

PwC data shows that Chinese consumers spend the most time on digital devices in the world; they have extremely high requirements on the convenience of the equipment. The average time a Chinese consumer spends on a smartphone, laptop, and tablets is as high as 170, 161 and 59 minutes respectively, which is far more than the global average time of 147, 108 and 50 minutes. Furthermore, the convenience of online and mobile shopping in China also make consumers willingly to be in the state of 24/7 internet connectivity.

For example, in the past, soccer fans of World Cup would only feel satisfied when they go to a bar or restaurant to watch the game with a beer, the crowd, and friends. Now, the “two-dimensional space” and “virtual social networking” consumers move “beer social networking” back home. They buy BBQ and beers on mobile; and, they interact with soccer fans around the world through bullet screen (a function which allows viewers to post on-screen comments in videos) while they watch the live broadcast online.

This brings new consumption pattern and demands. Young people’s entertainment such as the online novel, gaming, animation, and cartoons, which were once deemed as “improper occupation” by most of the adult have now made more and more young consumers realize their value of life, leading to a series of new business opportunities and peripheral products.

Women are born to love shopping. However, more male shoppers shop online than the female in China according to research data from Nielsen.

China’s online shopping male consumers account for 55% and female 45% in 2015. Over 79% consumers are highly educated; undergraduates, graduates, and even masters. China online shoppers with monthly incomes of no less than 8,000 yuan accounted for 81% of the total.

Online shopping users in rural areas grew by 40.6% in China and the urban by only 16.9% in 2014. However, online shopping usage rate in rural areas is still as low as 43.2%, compared to 60.4% in urban areas.

Online travel market has the largest transaction in China e-commerce market, followed by digital products market. Mothercare products are bought most frequent online by parents. 68% of online shoppers would search for goods online during weekends; 55% of users may add products to their shopping carts after dinner. The average family number of shoppers is 3.2 persons and over 60% of users are married.

Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang province and headquarter of Alibaba, hosts over one-third of China’s e-commerce websites. By the end of 2015, Hangzhou is expected to generate 100 billion service revenues and create 600,000 jobs for China.

Small and less-developed cities and rural areas are regarded as new growth opportunities by many e-commerce companies. For example, Alibaba has invested 10 billion yuan (US$15.76 billion) targeting rural areas.
